Default front wheel bearings

How do you know when the front wheel bearings are out on a 500 ho? The reason I ask is because I had taken out my front end and put the wheels back as if to ride it without AWD and the wheels were really loose and shaky. Being that there was no axle bolts in the hubs I just took some grade a bolts and some washers and put them through the struts and hubs and this fixed the problem. I quess I want to find out if the loose and shaky wheels is normal without the axles. I looked at the polaris models without AWD and they look the same, just don't have the hole in the struts for an axle.
