I have a 2004 sportman 500 ho the other day I went to ride and the battery was dead so I tried the recoil starter still didn't start , so I hooked the battery charger to it on 12 volts low and it boosted for about 5 min. then there was a loud pop somewhere on the left rear side of the machine.
First thought it was the battery but it wasn't, the machine ran till I unhooked the charger then it died and will not crank back

you may have damaged the voltage Rectifier....Not sure where it is on that make/model.....
I over-boosted one of my sleds years agao (with the truck) and blew one of them.....
I could not keep headlights in it...The voltage would rise as the engine RPM's went up....Caper......
