Wheel Bearings
Does anyone repack there wheel bearings? I know that a lot of you are going to say that they are sealed, in a way they are, but you can still pull the racers out with your fingers. I have read post of where peploe have done this and in their instructions they say to take the bearing out. I don't see why you need to take it out. I figure you could just remove the hub and leave it in there. I know that I can remove the racers without removing the hole bearing. I always do alot of damage to the bearing when I beat it out. I want to repack just to do some maintance to get longer life from the bearings, because the reason for the failure is that they get dry and start to get worn. Does any of this make sense? Make some noise.

i have actually removed a nylon side on a idler pulley bearing for a truck+its still going+that was 5 years ago,i heard a small noise,i removed it, spun it, sounded dry,i lightly packed it with antiseize which is a incredible grease you get at an auto store,or use prem. grease.use a small pic to carefully open the cover, cause if it don't snap back it ain't good.

Wheel Bearings
Well I have ruined my good name. I had a little trouble getting the axle out for some reason? I useally can take everything off and take it out with my hands. I had to tap it with a hammer. It took about 2 good licks. I opened up the wheel bearing and sure enough it was dry as a bone. I rebacked it (while still in hub) and put it back together. All was fine until I went to put the axle nut back on. I can't beleive I caused that much damage. I thought about putting the nut back on before I hit it but I didn't think that it would hurt that bad. I knew that there were holes in there for the carter pin but if you look at it you will notice that the hole top of the bolt is hollow. When I hit it I smushed it! I took it to the machine shop today and he said he probably could fix it. We will see. Trying to do some "PREVENTIVE" mantainace and created more mantainance. Wife says I can't leave well enough alone! Why is she always right?
