My friend's 2002 Sportsman 700 has about 3,500 miles on it.
We did a compression check. One cylinder was 165 psi and the other was 160 psi.
These readings are awesome because they are what a new engine would have.
For comparision my 2008 sportsman 800 was 175 psi on one cylinder and 165 psi on the other when new.
The 700 twin after 3,500 miles has lost little if any compression.
Based on this data I would say these engines would go at least 10,000 miles before any kind of rebuild would be needed.
We'll keep doing checks every year and keep you posted.
Anyone else have compression readings from your 700 or 800 to compare?

Just keep changing oil and filters regularly, should Last several years! Have serviced some 500's, 700's with more miles than that! Dont forget suspension service and check cv boots regularly for damage! Happy motoring!

Ball joint are the weak link on suspensions,If you remove a-arm and ball joint very loose, REPLACE before it pulls out of strut! Also keep check on a-arm bushings for wear. A little cv noise is normal for high mileage machines (clicking, especially in reverse),but if noise constant in fwd check cv joint and plunging joint for wear even if boots not torn! It just costs to play sometimes! NOT all machines exhibit these conditions. Good luck. P.S. Been off work on vacation and been able to help as much as I can,but back to work Tuesday and posts will be less, plus its too D**N HOT down here to go outside for very long for this OLD MAN in TEXAS! Think I'm going to bed!

I was happily surprised too.
Actually it was...
2002 Sp700 compression 160 left cyl., 164 rt. on 6/15/2008.
someone said on a twin they should be w/i 5 psi of each other.
Tech,
Ball joints, check .
A-arm bushings, check.
