[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]Hooray!!!! It was the stator after all. The reason it didn't run well after initially installing it was that the air gap wasn't close enough. I had purchased an rmstator replacement and the pickup coil could not be adjusted close enough. I cut that one out and replaced it with a used one and now it runs perfectly.
Thanks to all for your help and suggestions. Maybe this thread will help somebody else find their problem.

Glad you got it figured out. It is always rewarding to figure out an elusive problem.
