Default '98 335 Sportman, sputters in reverse

I just bought a '98 or '99 335 Sportman. Forward works fine, but in reverse the bike will go backwards, but the engine sputters and backfires, and has very little power.

thanks

I'm not sure about the sportsman but my two quads from that era have a rev limiter in reverse. There should be an "override" button on the left bar to bypass the limiter. That same button also allows you to back up in 4WD so be careful when backing up a hill,,, ha ha ha.

I just found that button. The atv does seem to work in reverse correctly with the override button in pressed, but I am still surprised by the sputtering without it.

The sputtering is a safety feature so you do not have full power in reverse un less you use the yellow button.

yea since it'll go just as fast just about backwards, you need the over ride button pushed for full power AS WELL AS FOR AWD IN REVERSE just so you wont find out the hard way the awd doesnt work w/out pushing the override(yellow button) while in reverse. it'll work fine for going forward w/out pushing the overrride.
