Normal for some shavings to be on magnetic drain plug, thats its purpose. As posted to others having same problems, remove linkage arms, set in neutral, adjust to where linkage arms drop straight in shifter arm holes with no resistance, then check. Surging? More info needed.

If the bell crank is good take the top off the shifter ,drain out oil and clean, check for broken springs and that the lockout flap is not broken or stuck. Most times a good cleanning and fresh oil will solve the hard shifting.
