all auto polaris have that little yellow button called an reverse override ride button. in the case for your bike it is so you will have fullpower/speed in while backing up. its designed to cut out the engine when its not being pushed in while in reverse for safety reasond.. welcome to the forum.

if its doing that in forward and reverse and doing it at idle, someting is wrong w/ the override. check to make sure the wires arent all corroded or the transmission switch isnt bad. this switch tells the override what gear your in so its not suppose to work while in forwards.

Reverse limiter modules prone to failure on early models. Just pull black wire from module under headlight area that goes into terminal board. black kill wire there also. If doesnt kill with switch, wrong wire pulled! Or pay about $70 for new module, jmo not worth it. Will have full speed in reverse eliminating button. I Do it for customers frequently! Hope this is your problem,Good luck.
