Default 1996 XPLORER TRANSMISSION HELP!!!!!!!!!!

it seems that the bushings that hold the shifter levers in the transmission are worn out. there is so much play that it will not go into forward or reverse. i don't see any bushings in the parts breakdown. so what holds the shafts tight in the gearcase? all i see is a retaining ring, washer and o-ring. i want to order the parts before i tear it down. thanks for the help in advance.

Default 1996 XPLORER TRANSMISSION HELP!!!!!!!!!!

No bushings just shift lever,o-ring, washer and circlip. Are bellcranks loose and slipping around on shafts? Are Linkage ends tight and not worn? Is there a lot of slack in shift box? Can be any of these. If wont go in fwd or reverse,HOPEFULLY just one of these items and not in tranny! Good luck

O-rings are not going to help. If play is in gearbox, you are going to have to pull it apart. Disconnect the linkage and see if you can shift the gears by hand using the connector on top of the tranny. If you can shift but there is still a lot of play, it definitely needs to come out and see what's wrong. If it won't shift, you may just have some rust that needs to be polished off with some emery cloth (still has to come out though)

Default 1996 XPLORER TRANSMISSION HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know if the o-rings are supposed to be on the outside of the transmission? Or are they supposed to be replaced by taking the tranny apart?
I can see the o-ring as #14 on this site.
http://partsfinder.onlinemicro...sp?Type=13&A=177&B=20

But it doesn't specify if they're inside or outside the transmission.
On my polaris, I took apart the retaining ring and washer but can't see the o-rings.
I have a leak coming from both shafts.

The tranny has to be disassembled to replace the o-rings on the shift shafts. Your case may be worn causing that leak to. They do get play in them over time.

Damn, that's what I thought but couldn't remember.
I took the damn thing apart back in May and never replaced those little o-rings.

I'm thinking I'll just put a ton of grease from the outside and keep topping off the oil. No time or money to start taking apart that thing again.

If you ever do tear it back apart and there is a lot of play in the shift shafts and need a case half, let me know. I have several laying around.
