Newbe just got 07 Sman500 EFI. No ADC. If I'm stopped in the middle of a long steep slippery hill [going up] and cant turn around or continue up, what's the best way to back down. Hi, low, rev, park, nuetral, Hand brake , footbrake, AWD? Does EBS or ADC work going backwards? Override? Dont want to flip. Also, is it normal for Xmission to randomly make screeming/whistling noises? Cant seem to lock up rear brake with foot pressure. Also, I see some 3000lb Warn winches on ebay for S100. Can these work on a 500? So far I love this quad....but I havent got to know it well yet. This seems like a great forum. Thanks in advance VOR

This is a educated guess, but I'd say the best way to come down is in reverse. The reason I say this is that the ebs should, in theory, work in reverse. That is because it uses a one way clutch on the drive clutch to use the engine to slow the xmission down. The engine does not change direction in reverse so ebs should still be functional. EBS will let you roll down backwards in forward gears though. (mine does) As for the noises, I don't know what sounds normal because I bought this bike used and before that I'd only rode polaris a few times. My bike makes all kinds of crazy noises(unlike a manually shifted bike). I just keep an eye on the fluids, change when needed and pray for the best. Good luck and welcome!

Welcome to the forum VOR. Don't go downhill in neutral unless you want to go fast. I back down in reverse and it seems to have some engine braking. NEVER use the foot brake backing downhill. It's an emergency brake and only works on the rear wheels. If you lock it up the ATV flips over on you. The hand brake is front and rear. You should always use it instead the foot brake.

the proper way to back down the hill would be in reverse and yes the ebs will still be working as mentioned the clutches still only turn forward. actuallly the ebs would work better when coming backwards as the rear wheels wouldnt lock up as easy as the weight would be on the rear tires more. as far as the noise goes. it might be the belt burning. make sure you use low range when going real slow(under 7mph) or when in mud or hauling something. the foot brake is really only for emergency or an accesory brake as mentioned and its a weak part of the design on these bikes. ride and be safe and welcome.

The hand brake is biased 60% front 40% rear so the hand brake is a good way to slow down going backwards down a hill. EBS should be engaged also automatically. The Warn 3000 would be more than enough. We have Warn/Polaris 2500 winches on our quads and they work fine.

Those winches are strong enough to hang your ATV up in a tree. I wanted to see how strong a Warn A2000 or A2500 was and it went right up there.
P.S. Don't try it because the gas pours out of the tank.

Another thing when throwing the cable over the tree, it will dig into the branch if it is a soft tree and then when you let the slack off it stays stuck there. If you could put a strap around the branch, then hook the winch hook to the strap or use a ****** block it will be a lot easier!

LOL, I was thinking that as I read your post, funny. But yeah, those winches are very strong.

Yeah Koerbs, it was funny as hell to see it hanging there like a giant pinata. It wasn't the smartest thing to do but I just had to know. No cable over the branch ever, and no ****** block this time. Just a tow rope and a shackle. I wanted to see if it would work on a straight line pull. I could tell it was working hard but up it went. Winches are friggin' awesome. I use them for lots of different things too. A good rule of thumb is to get a winch with a capacity 3 times the weight of the vehicle. If the wet weight is 800 pounds a 2500 pound winch is plenty, and a 3000 pound winch can move 1000 pounds without breaking a sweat.
