Default 02 Sportsman 700

Please help. I just purchased a 02 Sportsman 700 and noticed it started to make a wierd sound when it is moving. When in low the sound only happens when you are moving quickly, in high it happens right away. It sounds like a whistle or a wine of sorts. I thought maybe belt, so I took off the cover to look and it appears to be in great shape. I lifted the back wheels off the ground to take a listen when its sitting still. The AWD was OFF, and when I gave it throttle the AWD kicked in about 5 seconds after the rear wheels were spinning and the atv just about drove itself into my sled. Whats up??????? Any ideas????? Thanks

I might be buying the same machine tomorrow.... an '02 700 Sportsman. Does this machine have a Hilliard clutch in the diff like my '07 700 EFI? or does it have the clutches on the wheels like my 2000 magnum 500?? I haven't been to look at it yet.

Hilliard system in the diff. It is pulling the front tires because it has some problem with the cage up front and it will engage when it is not supposed to. This is caused by the awd being engaged at too high speeds. I've heard that the rollers will grind grooves and when the grooves get bad it will do this. The diff components can be bought cheaper from john deere for the gator. I also hear that these parts are much tougher. I've heard that it will run a long time like this, but if you like to do doughnuts I would recommend fixing it. I say this because if you do doughnuts in 2wd and you're screaming the motor and AWD engages its not good on the front diff.(grenade!!)

Also inncorrect or low fluid may cause this.

yep, it clunks and whines a little. I'm told its normal. I maintain it as best I can and pray for the best. My friend had a 700 ranger(side by side) and the xmission was much louder than mine. Everything else seemed to break but not the xmission and engine.

Well that makes me feel alot better. Thanks. If you can think of anything else I should do to it please let me know. A friend told me to put a clutch kit or a carb kit in it, what do you think?
