Default Friend looking at Sportsman 400 need info

Friend is wanting to get a sportsman. He found a good deal on a 400. I was looking at pictures of it and it looks like the halkeye. Is the new SP400 just the halkeye with a new name and if so how does it compare in build quality to the SP500ho?

I believe it's the same frame as the Hawkeye but they put a 450 cc motor in it. From what I hear it is a very good running machine. THey also beefed up some of the components they were having problems with too. I had the Hawkeye 300 and loved the small size it was great for making your own trails for getting to the hunting spots. I think if I would have had the 450 motor I would have never gotten rid of it.

I know Mongrol has one so I'm sure he'll chime in and a couple other guys have em too. You'll get some good info probably by the end of the day

Frame and suspension is heavier on the 400. Still has the rideability of the Hawkeye but lots more power.

I own both and am happy as a clam with performance and reliability. The 300, in my opinion, is still an entry level machine and may not stand up to hard use, although RickeyParker rode his 300 agressively with success.

Have fun!
