Default Differences in Scramblers over the years

Hello everyone,

Looking into my first ATV, and think I want something like a scrambler, with Ok utility and decent sport. I know I want 4x4 for some of the riding parks we have available.

Question is what is the main differences in scamblers over the years? I know some went from a cahin drive front, to shaft, but I dont know when.

Also looking at a scrambler with a bad gear box, is there anything going on in there that would make it a hard replacement? Its just used for reverse and forward correct?

I come from snowmobiling background and have a yamaha RX1 on a 100hp shot of nitrous and am mecanically inclined by nature so I will probably be doing my own wrenching. Any other tips on what to look for in a scrambler? I'm preferring a 400 2 stroke right now for the modification potentinal. Thanks!

Sweet bikes.... 98 and up have concentric drive and shaft drive up front (concentric keeps the chain tension constant regardless of swingarm travel )

You can mod the **** out of the 400, sky is the limit.

I had to replace the trans, and thru one in from a 96 xplorer 400 4x4.. for LOW GEAR

It has H / N / R normally, and now I have added LOW

Thanks for the reply I was hoping to bring out when the concentric drive was introduced. Sounds like the 98+ is probably the best bet. I'm looking at a 98 so that is good. Is the trans a big deal to replace or fairly simple?

For mods I was think of a pipe and the required stuff to get to around 55hp, I think it was be a blast at that power. Looks like fun.

I did my first atv trip this year and loved it aside from the dust on the trails and dirt roads. Other then that its almost as fun as snowmobiling once they connect trail systems like with sleds.

The first few years they had chain drive front-ends. All the changes after that seem kind of minor. There used to be 1.5" less suspension on the front end too. The first 500s weren't H.O.s but the 500 H.O.s have just as much power as the 400s. Aaen can get the 500 up to 47 HP which ain't bad for a 4-stroke. http://www.aaenperformance.com/Power500.asp They can take the 400 all the way up to 75 HP with a 440 big bore kit. http://www.aaenperformance.com/Power400.asp Aaen specializes more on Polaris than some other people do, but there are tons of other mods available.

98 was a transition year so better off with a 99-up.The 500s took a drop in good parts in 04 so on them you are better off with a 99-03.The 400 your best bet would be an 02 400 ScramblerX other than the 99-00 the rest were only 2x4

Thanks for the help everyone, I sealed the deal on a different one. Its a 2000 4x4 scrambler 2 stroke 400, with a rear rack and winch. Almost as cheap as the one with a bum gear box. Looks to be stock all its life and the original tires have about 70% tread remaing nice clean unit. I'm excited to play!

For mods what is the concenus on vendors? Aaen, or rittercycle is the two I am looking at. Thanks!

I've been very happy with the results I've gotten from Rick, great customer service.

But I've also heard good things about Aean.

And since nobody mentioned it, Bold New Graphics.
