MY '00 SPORTSMAN500 HAS JUST HAD ITS 1ST MALFUNCTION. THE SPEED-O-METER HAS QUIT. EVERYTHING ELSE IS JUST FINE EXCEPT FOR THIS. DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO FIX.
I CAN'T GET ANY HELP FROM MY DEALER, EXCEPT TO BRING IN AND LEAVE IT . SAID HIS BACK LOG WAS 2 WEEKS. AND THATS 2 WEEKS TO LONG.

THANKS,
VIC

SPORTSMAN005, Don't feel bad so did mine. A freind of mines Mag500 has gone out twice, each time its beeen the sending unit on the front wheel. I used to think it was from water but, now I'm pretty sure it happens from a hard hit on the sending unit like a rock at speed. They are about fifty bucks to replace. I figure I'll just use my GPS for awhile that way I'll keep the miles of my wheeler! HeHe it will be worth more when I sell! Your hour meter should still work so you'll know when its time to change oil anyway. They are easy to replace but, I want new tires and some Works struts first.

My '00 Sportsman went out too. My needle did not move, AND the digital display went on the blink, all LED bars lit. Eventually the engine would stall. Brought in under warranty and it was replaced. They did not tell me what happened, but now I have a theory (on mine anyway). The plastic nut that holds the ignition switch in place ALWAYS backs itself loose. I think that I twisted the key and rotated the whole switch and may have shorted it out. The reason I did not catch this was I keep the key in all the time and the rubber boot hid the condition. Now I constantly check the lock nut and it ALWAYS works it way loose. But now I know better.

If everything else works/digital display/ your problem may be a damaged sensor as described above.I would check for loose connections first. To replace it is a simple task.

The speedo on my 2000 SP335 quit. Had to take it to the dealer. Turned out to be the sensor by the front wheel. Covered under warranty. If I had known what it was before leaving it at the dealer for 3 weeks, I would have bought the part myself and installed it. Oh well.
