Studs on ATV's??
Would depend on the reasoning for wanting more traction on ice. Plowing, pulling I would go for the chains but the carbide X ones that criss cross the tire rather than the across ones. For icey trails or lake riding I would opt for the screws. As I said before have had the sled upwards of 100 and have not lost 1 screw yet.

Studs on ATV's??
I use my 500 EFI DLX -07 for plowing and for 1 ft of snow I don't need chains at all and my driveway is a steep hill (4x4 cars only can manage). But I want the studs to secure that I can be safe even when there is slippery ice beneath the snow. That is the only case I need more traction than I already have and that is only a precaution I would say. Here in Sweden we have MaxiGrip studs with carbide that you fasten in the tire. It is tried on tractors (9 tonne size) that has driven 7000 km on asphalt only and not one single stud loosened and all of them still hade carbide left after that treatment. That is what I will try.
Here is a link for pics of the studs. <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.maxi-grip.se/en/index.html

http://www.maxi-grip.se/en/index.html Maybe this link will work better. That's better than using chains. I ordered a set of chains and sent them back when I read the instructions. It said you can only go 10 mph or something like that with chains on. That's okay for plowing but not trail riding, and I don't need them to plow.
