Scam. If a deal is "too good to be true" it probably is.

Okay, I must admit that I was very nearly taken by a Craigslist scam. I had new ATV listings on my RSS feed, and one day I saw a posting for a Honda Rancher. Same story-- out of state machine, seller to pay shipping and offer a too-good-to-be-true price on a late model ATV with beautiful pictures. I contacted the seller by email, who expressed an interest in going through eBay motors to "ensure safety" but for me to send the payment via Western Union. I was so eager to buy this machine, that I went to the bank and had the cash in my hand. But I was still skeptical, so I contacted eBay Motors directly to ask them about it. They had no record of the listing and told me this was a very common scam. It seems like they post these "bait" ads in multiple cities on craigslist, which causes them to get flagged and removed within an hour. Since then, I've seen a couple dozen of these ads on craigslist, for some reason mostly listing Hondas.

I e-mailed the person selling the utv and put down that they were on the internet task force scam alert list and that all e-mail was considered evidence to the fraud case that was being compiled and that a federal marshal was going to do an investigation into the whereabouts of this e-mail adderess and persue this to the full extent of us law and that they better stop with this scam immediately
see ya from fl
P.S. I dont know if there is a task force but it felt good

Good one searoach. The FCC or FTC or someone has a bunch of agents to follow up on stuff like that. Since homeland security was created I don't know who does what anymore, but internet crimes are still crimes. Anything that happens across state borders is a federal crime. Maybe the FBI still handles that.

There's all kinds of fun you can have with these scamers. My favorite is to involve them in a lengthy email conversation. But write each sucessive email so that it makes less and less sense, ask them when they are going to pay you , stuff like that . My record for keeping one on the line was a little over two months, good fun if you don't have anything else better to do.

Never pay for something prior to seeing it in person. If you can't talk to them on the phone and meet to look at a machine, common sense says SCAM
