over heating in the snow sportman 500
i have a 2006 500 ho x2 with 26inch tires...i just bought this quad and i took it for a couple of rides but i'm on it pretty hard in the snow 50-100% throttle sometimes for a few minutes in the snow in AWD and it over heated a couple of times going up hills...i since cleaned the rad really good and the fan still comes on....is this normal....should i changed the coolant to "engine ice" coolant?

even in snow if the rad. gets plugged some what it might over heat when your hamming on it and really not going very fast too get the air flow. but at least you know the fan is working. the only thing about using the after stuff like engine ice or what have you is too make sure it wont freeze up as it brings the freeze point up i beleave. imo.

does it "detune the engine" by design when it overheats. This summer my 2008 SP500 X2 overheated and I noted the engine ran like crap. I wasn't sure if this was a direct result of heat or something initiated purposely by the ECU to prevent damage.
On mine I had cleaned the radiator from the front - however, I didn't get the back side. A quick trip back to the house - a thorough cleaning - and things were fine. My lesson learned was to make sure I thoroughly clean BOTH sides of the radiator. At the same time I removed the plastic "grill" that goes over the winch. I figured this would allow more air flow. (The thing kept popping off anyway).
Now that it is winter - my rad is clean - and the fan does cycle even when it is 10-degrees out. I believe this is normal. I did install a temp gauge to monitor the temp as a extra bit of comfort.

You may have answered your own question. My 400HO runs all day long in deeps snow with the rad covered in snow and no overheating.
