I have a 2005 sportsman that has some electrical gremlins in it! A few weeks back I operated the atv with no problem. A week later went to start no power at all would not jump off no juice to the dash panel. Went back about a week later to load on truck and carry to shop turn key lights engine all fire up no problem? I have not had the no power problem since but I had one tail light and one low beam headlight not working. Recently while riding the one headlight that was out came on a started burning only to go out again. When I removed the bulb on the taillight not working to check the bulb the other went out. Now I have no tallights! Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!

I can't be of much help, but I'll throw some ideas at you to at least get you started since there have been no replies to your post for a day or so...

First, your rig is about 10 years younger than mine (95), so some of this may not apply.

Your problem is obviously electrical, so you might start with the process of elimination. I would start with easy stuff. Pick a problem, like a light that is not working, and see if you can change it by pushing buttons, like the reverse override switch, or in different gears (which would trigger the transmission switch), and the brakes, etc... If something changes, then you might have narrowed it down, and you can post those results for more advice.

Next, you can try disabling some things, like (again) the reverse speed limiter (which seems to be the root of a lot of electrical evil). It can be disabled by disconnecting the black wire from it. You might also try disconnecting various bulbs, like you did with the tail lights, so see what changes.

You should also check to be absolutely sure that it is not possible that you ran it with the battery disconnected at any time because of a loose battery cable or something of that nature. I am assuming you didn't do that intentionally, but maybe you did? If that happened, I have heard that it can cause serious issues with your electrical system, similar to what you are describing.

Last but not least, it is very likely that you have a short somewhere. I would check the electrical panel (not sure where that is on your model, but somewhere under the front cover) for any loose, stripped, or otherwise potentially shorted wires. If you have a wiring diagram (available in haynes or clymer repair manuals), make sure that you didn't somehow connect something incorrectly and that everything appears to be connected where it should be.

You should invest in a test light or ohm meter... that one tool has saved me a bazillion dollars so far. Then you can verify or trace where power is or is not getting to with various buttons and switches turned on or off. The transmission switch can cause some major malfunctions, so that is another place to consider looking.

I hope that at least gives you somewhere to start. Once you start looking at those things, usually something will jump out at you.

Hey thanks Jchunn that certainly gives me somewhere to start! I have the test light and ohm meter so I will start using them on some of your ideas.

Thanks again!

Yes Caper it did and I had it replaced at no charge at the dealer. Thanks for the response!

Jchunn- you were right when you said get the test light and the ohm meter out and start tracing wires. Found the headlight problem last night. Left side was not getting but about 5 volts not enough to ligh the bulb. Must have a bad splice somewhere because according to the wiring diagram the two headlight wires are spliced together. I just created a new splice and fixed the problem. I will start on the taillights next!

Thanks again for the help!
