Sportsman 500 - No Spark!

I have no spark on my 2002 Polaris Sportsman 500. The problem started when I had to remove the head, including the pull start, flywheel and stator, to replace the tensioner on the timing chain. When I got everything back together I had no spark.
I'd read about others who had a squashed spark plug cable from it being run between the fuel tank and the frame, and since mine had a flat spot on it from that same situation, I replaced my coil and plug wire combination. And I got my spark back . . . for a minute. By the time I got the plug back in the engine, no spark again.
My tests with the ohm meter read okay except for two things - the exciter/stator coil test between the red and black/red wires is supposed to be 1.9 ohms, and mine reads 18.5 ohms. And on my new-but-failed ignition coil, the primary resistance is supposed to be 0.3 ohms and mine is 0.7; the secondary resistance is supposed to be 6.3K ohms and mine is 11.5K.
Does anyone familiar with ignitions on these things have any idea what's going on?

Just a follow up on this problem, occasionally I do get a single weak spark when I first turn the engine over. But I just get one spark, and then nothing from then on, until I wait 10-15-20 minutes. Then I may get the single spark again.
It's been a few days . . . anyone?
