Old Polaris Tech
I have a copy of a message from a Polaris dealer that Polaris has released an updated calibration for all 05-07 800 sportsman engine's that decrease's exhaust gas temp's (EGTS) and should be installed and will help with heat problem's in our ATV's, i.e. melting plastic.
Do you have any knowledge of this? Do they reflash the computer to make it run richer. My dealer is playing dumn and tell's me I need the new heat shield kit.

Any help is alway's appreciated.

Is the heat shield kit a recall? Is the reflash a recall? I am guessing maybe just a bulletin. My dealer saw that the heat tape had a hole rubbed thru from the shifter linkage and ordered new tape but didnt look to see if the linkage bar need adjusted to keep it from rubbing. Imaging that. Anyway, I told him I wanted him to note it on the computer so that this summer when the heat tape wears away again and the plastic starts melting I want a new plastic cover...

All I can say is what I have typed to you guy's is what is in a message from Breese Lawn and Garden. I am trying to find out the same thing. If I can get something to help it run cooler so I don't have to keep 4 layer's of heat tape on that side of the bike that would be great.
I think they know it's a problem but not enough for a recall, they don';t want to have to pay for it if the bike's out of warranty.
I'll guarrantee if my bike still had warranty, they would fix it. Polaris hasn't made it a recall, so no fix unless under warranty. JMO

I'll bet if you put a fuel controller on them it would richen them up to help them run cooler, I am not prepared to drop 250.00 yet if I can get a fix that should be taken care of by a deale.
Sorry for venting!

They didn't say it was a recall. To me that meant it was more like a Tech bulletin.

They also replaced the front and rear Cab plastic(think that is what it is called) and that side panel on mine when they did the heatshield.

They had trouble getting the new stickers for the tank and when they came in they were the Stealth type. I didn't mind since Dealer had swapped all plastic but the headlight pod to Gloss black prior to me getting the machine.

It was still under warranty so no charge to me just had to do without it for a couple of days.

I can't really say it is appreciably cooler on my leg there, but it doesn't appear to have melted the plastic. They did add some extra shielding in there similar to what the 500 X2 has back in the exhaust area. Kind of a mat with foil tape over it.

I can't say mileage changed appreciably.
It was just breaking in, but I also noticed it seemed really alive horsepower wise. Could be richer mixture or getting broke in.

Thank's Big bros, I appreciate your feedback, I like that it seemed to come alive in hp for you, I have 2 riding buddy's that have 08's, I think it would be safe to say that it took 05-07 to figure the problem out and they figured it out in 08. Those 2 machine's have no issue's and run great, that's all I'm lookin for.

It was a "tech bulletin" that applied only to people that had complained about excessive heat problem with exhaust! Not all machines 'supposedly" had this problem. We reflashed several 800's for lean condition which was the cause!

I have an 08 SP800 and it has a factory heat shield for the header pipe. The plastic still gets hot and it burned my snow pants. I added a plastic heat shield to the plastic for my right leg. I made it out of black ABS and put heat tape on the inside. I took out the plastic "clip" and put in a 1/4-20 x 1 1-4 inch bolt I also drilled and put a 8-32 (w/ nylon lock nut) screw through the plastic behind the side panel (out of view) to hold it in place and against vibration. I do not know how to post pics on the forum, but if you send me your email I will gladly forward them to you...
