I have a 1996 polaris sportsman 500 4X4..I was riding it the other day and it all the sudden came to a stop.It will not go foreward or reverse.but it will go into low/Foreward I didnt hear any pop or other noises.but anyone had this happen to them or any Ideas of where to start?? Its like it is in neutral when in foreward or reverse

 

A friend had an issue where the aluminum shift linkage wore out and it would not actually shift the machine into gear. The shift lever moves but the linkage was spinning on the trans.. We may need more info. to help narrow the problem.Is it stuck in neutral??

 

No the gear shifter works(Ithink) fine I even dissconected it to see if maybe it wasnt adjusted right and moved the shift lever by hand and it does absolutly nothing.foreward or reverse.but i do have my low gear,ugh

 

did u blow ur belt, i'd check that before going to the transmission, does it have the transmission and rear diff as one unit or are they seperate. if the belts not the problem pull the drain plug on ur tranny and see how bad the fluid looks, if its a gray color and looks like metal, i'd say thats ur problem, also see how much metal is on the drain plug magent, always has some, but not a lot usually
