850 torque specs needed
#11
Ok...so far not impressed with the Polaris service manual,I've found a few discrepancies, and some, like this one are biggies..
There is a TQ chart in the begining of the Engine section that shows the TQ as 26ft lbs+ 90* for the head bolts...but the actual text procedure shows 43.5 ft lbs+90*??
It doesn't say what size the bolts are so you will have to use you judgement on that one. It may be obvious that one or the other is right....43.5+90* sounds reasonable for head bolts but it's hard to say without knowing what size they are.
Anyway here is the basic procedure...
The 6 main head bolts are wet torqued. Install the 6 main bolts finger tight then install the 2 outer 6mm bolts. Then, get this, you tighten the 6 main bolts snug,lol..no kidding that is what it says.. Then tighen them to 43.5ft lbs(59Nm) Then the next round is an additional 90*..sounds like you need new bolts huh? Even though the manual doesn't say that..
The TQ for the 2 small bolts is apparently standard TQ which is 72-78 inch lbs.
Sequence is:
Intake side
4---2---6
5---1---3
Exhaust side
Camshaft sproket bolt is 28ft lbs..says to tq after you install the chaing tensioner..
Thermostat 89 in lbs
Valve cover 89 in lbs..
IAFM is 18in lbs then 89 in lbs..

I will be assembling this thing tomorrow. Big difference in 26 ft lbs + 90 degrees and 43.5 ft lbs + 90.
