Default 97 sportrman 400 4x4 2stroke Oil/coolant problems NEED HELP

[img]i/expressions/brokenheart.gif[/img]Hey guys I drained the counterbalance and found coolant drained out. when I drained the crankcase the same milky stuff came out as what was in the top of my rad. I drained the coolant from the rad and there was not very much of the milky suff. The quad was running fine but had coolant leaking out of thecounterbalance overflow tube so decided to investigate! Would it be possible that it is only the head gasket causing these problems? Also do i have to pull the motor and split the case to replace the coolant pump seal and bearing orr? I do not have a repair man for this but want to start the teardown. O.P.T any more on this? Thanks for any help!!!

You dont have to pull motor to replace bearing and seals and dont forget case gasket also,BUT usually inlet neck on coolant hose at water pump hits frame and I just remove top motor mount and loosen front mount to get wiggle room. You might drain 10 mm screw center of engine to see if coolant is in bottom end. Hopefully not. Head gasket could just have a small burnt spot allowing oil/fuel mixture to contaminate coolant over a period of time. Do you smell coolant at exhaust or see excess white smoke? Manual will help a lot on your first time! Not impossible, but hard for coolant to get into engine from outer cover. Has to go through spacers and o-rings and crank seal to do it!

Thanks OPS , there is no coolant or white smoke out the exhaust ,compression is 107,counterbalance drain was full of coolant, do I get at the waterpump through the re-coil side? Will the head have to come off? Thanks, just looking ahead as to what I may replace as I go such as piston, rings etc.

107 compression at low end! might as well tear down top end and bore to next oversize as well as addressing water pump issue,THAT is if you plan on continuing to keep machine! Water pump behind recoil, stator and outer cover,BEST to have a manual as a couple things are critical such as not blocking small oiling hole in water pump casting when bearing and seals are installed and condition of water pump shaft for corrosion.
