Starting problems 96 sportsman 500
#1
I have asked several people about the issue I am having with my 1996 sportsman 500 4x4 and hoping that someone on here has a solution for me:
When I try starting my fourwheeler for sometimes with the electric start, everything is turning over, it just won't crank. If I pull the rope, it starts fine. After I have ran it a while, it will start with the electric start fine. Also if it sometimes will not turn off when the key and the switch is turned to the off position. With the switches turned off it will eventually quit. Any suggestions?

sounds like you have an electrical issue somewhere. could be a bare wire shorting out.
on the start problem you pulse coil could be going out or just out of adjustment. have heard of a few folx able to ream out the mounting holes to get it a little closer to the flywheel and all is fine.

remember that the starting motor draws a large current and will drop voltage of battery, so condition of battery will determine how much it drops, and if too low there is nothing left for a proper spark
The fact it starts with pull start and also when warmed up sort of says the battery is the problem

you can replace it but i would try reaming out the holes first. its cheaper.
<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote> remember that the starting motor draws a large current and will drop voltage of battery, so condition of battery will determine how much it drops, and if too low there is nothing left for a proper spark </end quote></div>
i used to think that too but these things are magneto ignition not coil packs. as long as the flywheel is going round fast enough there is enough energy to create a spark that will fire

Could you provide some more detail about "reaming out the holes?"
