4X4 reverse

4X4 reverse only works if the reverse over drive button is pushed and held. Is this right? And everytime I do it it changes the mode on the dash screen.

Hi DouginMichigan, you've got it right. You'll see it say "Slow" when you push the button. When the AWD switch is activated and you then back up using the yellow button it will lock in AWD and allow you to go faster in reverse. If you are in 2x4 mode and you push it, then you can back up more quickly.

I have a mod kit from Quadovator that puts a on off switch on the dash for the reverse override. When the switch is on, it in in reverse override all the time. When it is off then the yellow button works as normal. Great for plowing and I could imagine it being great for when I get stuck in the mud.
On a side note, it seems that they changed this in the XP. Accoding to the dash (have not actually verified this) it is in 4x4 in reverse and the button only removes the speed limitation in reverse.

Yes, the XP still in awd in reverse whether the button is pushed or not. The only thing the button does on the XP is turn the speed limiter off and act as a mode button.

Really!?!?!?
Thank you Polaris!!!!!!
I always thought having to press another button just to have 4x4 in reverse was the most infuriatingly annoying thing Polaris had ever done. It can be downright dangerous when you're trying to keep the machine upright and don't have a free hand to play with the button. I recently had that problem when I had my machine in a position where it was on the verge of turning over backward and I simply couldn't get my thumb on the stupid switch. Made recovering the ATV much more difficult.
It is also a real pain when you're plowing snow and use a manual blade lift. You have your right hand on the throttle and you need to run the blade with your left and you still need to activate the reverse override to get 4x4 to work. You run out of hands.
I can see the utility of limiting the engine power in reverse especially with the higher power engines that are so common now but having to use it to activate 4x4 was simply dumb and downright dangerous at times.

Quite often the old style 4x4 would lock up one or both front hubs if you were backing up and it engaged. You were better off having an override switch and not getting stuck in 4x4 or 4x3 all the time.
