Default sportsman clutch issues

hi all ,brand new poster here on the forums so i was wondering if you guys could help me out.i have a 02 sportsman 400 that i cant figure out.when i put it in low it works fine.when i put it in high it acts like the belt is slipping.i took the cover off to look at the clutch and it appears to be sliding along the shaft like it is supposed to.i tried a new belt but still have the same result.if you are on a slight incline it just will not hardly pull itself up,drop it in low and it works great.anybody got any idea on what to try?thanks guys and looking forward to posting here often!!

welcome to the forum. if it seems like it takes alot of reving to get going and doesnt seem to have any pulling power, like up hills, and almost like the belt is slipping, then as he mentioned the buttons in the secondary clutch are more then likely worn out and you can replace them for like $3.00 a piece and theres 3 of them. they are under the helix and what the helix ramps ride on.

very easy to get apart but you really need a third and maybe a fourth hand to put it back together

yes very easy to do if you pay attention to what your doing when you take apart your clutch w/ a pair of snap ring pliers is the only tool you need once the clutch is off the bike. its under pretty good tention(helix i mean) so you need to be pushing down on the helix when you take it off but as he mentioned, it takes a couple of extra hands to put it back together. if your unsure about it just take the clutch off and give it to a dealer when you buy the butons and let him do it for you for the labor cost. imo
