Default New Touring on Way - Storage Options???? Quadrax??

Picking up my new 2008 Stealth Black 500 this Friday (Wahoo) and am trying to figure how to add enough storage for an extended weekend for 2.

Hopefully I'll have a few weeks to figure out the storage issue before I need it, but I need somewhere to put 5-10 gallons of fuel, water, food, shovel, camping gear, clothes, cooler, etc.

I haven't had the front pod light before so that'll be a limiting factor too, although I can make do without the headlight if I have to. The new rear soft bag from Polaris seems too small. I also looked at a Quadrax Box but it looks like a cage for the passenger and it's expensive.

What do you guys do when you really need to load up? Add flat racks (drop down will block lights)?

Thanks again for your input.

I got a large Polaris semi rigid bag for the front. It fits perfectly between the rails on my front rack extension. I usually put extra clothing in it for long day trips. You can also fit a ton of small items in the front storage box that is under the rack. I have: tow straps, tree strap, hand pruning saw, ****** block, extra drive belt, first aid kit, matches, lighter, hex head wrenches, small socket set, torx head wrenches, cargo net, riding gloves, etc. The Quadrax boxes and others like it are a good choice too. Kolpin makes fuel packs that lie flat on your rack and can have things stacked on it. They are a little expensive. I made a box for 3-2.5 gallon jugs that I lash down to my son's ATP for really long trips. A trailer might be another way to go if you are doing mainly trail riding and nothing too extreme.

Do you mind telling what you paid for your machine? I have looked at the quad box and if it is the same one I am thinking you have to take the passenger seat off and the box locks into the bracket where the passenger seat was.

after looking at the auction link I don't think it is the same box I was thinking it was.

Moose, I looked at trailers too, but the terrain we cover tends to rule that out. I assume that the large bag blocks the headlight when it's full. Does it collapse below the light when it's not full? I had the 4 gallon kolpin pack on my last quad and I may go with the Rotopax this time, but you really need to brace the mounts. I lost one pack when the mounting bolts broke and the pack got dragged on the trail, I had to plug the holes with paper towels to stop the leaks until I got back to the truck (short ride fortunately). Also awkward to use - would go with two 2 gal packs next time. I'd prefer something to handle standard (cheap) gas cans.

Rmontez, I sent you a PM with the pricing. The box you're thinking of means that I would have to remove the back seat, which I need.

Yep, it blocks the high beam only. It's a cloth exterior with plastic inserts to make it "rigid". I haven't collapsed it but it probably would be able to be crunched underneath the high beam. I usually run with just the low beams anyhow. No need for me to go crazy fast when dark is coming on. I hear you on the expense issue. I think I got the cans for about $4 apiece and I used a scrap piece of pine to make the box that holds the 3 cans tightly.

Most of your room is going to be up front. I would go with a couple of Rotopax flat cans for gas up front along with soft bags front and back for everything else. You're probably going to want to change out the front springs with polaris heavy duty, they are $50 and take about an hour to change but the improvement is really great. If you still find you need room you can get a rear rack extender from Cabelas. I don't like the extra wieght too far back as it can make you tippy when climbing, but you know your needs. If you block your front headlight with the bags, you still have your low beams. Might want to look at brighter bulbs for the low beams or think about a headlamp on your helmet to see where your not turning. Sounds like fun!
