Default 550XP is leaking oil.

Along the lines of what has already been said...
If it is indeed the valve cover leaking(can't see the pics at work) then I would check the bolts and make sure they are tightened properly. Even if they were tightened from the factory there is a slight possibility that the gasket compressed and that the bolts now need to be re-torqued. In any case if they aren't tightened properly that can cause the gasket to leak.

Not to insult anyone but people have different levels of experience that are hard to judge in a internet forum so this is a general statement..if you don't know the torque specs and you aren't confident in your ability to tighen the bolts without over tightening them your best bet is to let the dealer do it. Stripping the threads out of the head will just make matters worse. Not trying to scare you, nothing special to it really..it's just that I have met people who have never even held a screwdriver and seen people make matters alot worse by trying to fix things...so I feel I must make these kind of warnings so I don't feel bad when someone's next post is i broke off a bolt in the head or stripped the threads..lol
it's your machine and you know your skill level and what you are comfortable doing. If it were me i'd check the bolts,if they were tight and I couldn't get it to stop leaking. I'd change the gasket..but I am not suggesting you change the gasket..let the dealer do that if it coes to that.
A valve cover replacement is a pretty minor repair...on most machines the hardest part is getting stuff out of the way to get the cover off.. If you are at all confident in your dealer then I wouldn't sweat it. I really doubt you could Polaris to replace your machine for a leaking valve cover gasket,or just about any defect unless it was a repeated problem that they couldn't fix. Even then you'd likely have to get a lawyer involved.

Thanks H.O.

My mechanic ability is quite good however I dont have a torque wrench here to make sure they are tighten correctly. I'll let the dealer take care of it and they can do more if there is something else that i didnt catch. However i believe its the valve cover thats leaking and on the side i pointed out. Ive reached around to the other side of the cylinder and felt for any oil and it doesnt seem to be leaking on that side.
Im still impressed and happy with the ATV, its unfortunate that this happens.

Thanks guys for all your help!

Most likely just need retorqued and you'll be on your way. +1000 what H.O said!!!
Torque wrench is number 1 necessity on these machines now a days. Seems they are being built with tighter and tighter tolerances and it all works hand in hand. Quick fix at the dealer. Leave the covers off when you take it and most likely you'll be taking it back home in about 15 minutes. Let us know how it turns out.

Yeah I had the same problem with my 500. I didnt even notice it until I had it there for the bad sway bar bushings and was looking it over while he had it on the lift. I pointed it out and he took care of it then.

as far as a new bike maybe if it was like a day old but 1 month down the road i dont think any dealer would replace the entire bike regardless of where it was leaking.....even if you ran it out of oil and blew the motor they would have to replace motor....waranty rarley allows complete replacement...

Since we only have 6mo on the warranty im trying to pay attention to every little detail on these machines, just making sure to do my part.

I am impressed with how easy it is to get to everything!!
