Default Help #2 (starter now)

2007 Sportsman 450

I just put my atv back together after diagnosing the whole electrical system and replacing the ECM. I got a total of an hour or so of riding in after the fix. Now i come home and try to start it and the starter wont engage and turn the motor over. The starter just spins freely. I tried putting it in gear and rocking it back and forth to engage or move any parts. Still nothing catches and starts. I drained a lot of water out of the recoil area.

Please give me some direction or things to start with.

Thanks!!!!

was the starter taken out or apart? is ther alot of water/mud in the area that could have made the start drive get stuck in? sounds like the starter is not spinning out to engage and may need to com eout to be checked, cleaned. imo

Update......after 5-6 twists of the key at different times, the starter engaged and did its job.

Other than the rotation part, is there any other mechanical jobs the starter does. My thoughts were it just spun. Go ahead and laugh.........lol.

there is (i believe at least) a bendix in there that throws out and engages the flywheel to turn the motor over. after the motor spins the flywheel faster than the starter can spin it pushes that bendix back in away from the flywheel. if you did infact have water in that area i would tear into to check out the bendix and depening on how long the water was in there i would check the stator too to make sure there isnt any corrosion just waiting to kick your *** in the middle of a trail
