Default 2002 polaris sptsman overheating?

I was riding for about four hours and my electric start went and noticed my headlights were not coming on, on the way back to the trail head my overheat light came on. I thought this was due to the dead battery. After a fifteen minute ride back I then went and bought and installed a new battery. Electric start, lights all work now. After about 15 minutes my red hot light comes on. I can touch the resevoir and hoses and they dont feel hot, is there a way to make sure the fan comes on? everything vibrates so hard to tell, maybe ill try looking with a flash light. any ideas would be great. oh i did find a plastic cap in the resevoir wich may have been blocking the supply to the rad? ...help please!!!!

thank you in advance.

the red plastic cap is suppose to be in the resevoir. w/ thge bike off trying turning the fan by hand to make sure it turns freely and not bound up by anything. you can unplug it and run a 12 volt power source to make sure it is working. if the light was coming on then the fan should have been on as well. might be the temp. sensor is bad. as far as the battery going bad, i would be finding out if its the battery thats no good or is it the charging system thats not working. imo

Follow the wires up from the temp sensor, its on the lower right corner of rad.,unplug the temp sesor and put a jumper wire across the plug on the machine, if the fan works withh the key on , its a bad temp sensor, if the fan doesnt work, its the fan.

thank you soooo much for your input, well i took it apart to find that one of the power wires from the sensor to kick on the fan was not connected. I reconnected it turned on the bike and woohoo all is good. fan runs and turns off and on!!! I did have the old battery tested so needed a new one any ways. Now im back in action!! thanks again for the input!!!
