I am looking at picking up a used polaris trail boss 250 4x4:

-What should I look for as in normal issues ( i can expect to repair) and or to get a sense of the well kept of the machine.

-What years were the 250 trail boss made

I would look at the chains, sprockets, bushings (a-arm and rear swing arm). Check to see if it has been greased, air filter clean......... See that it starts up good when the engine is cold to the touch. It is a two stroke so there is no engine oil in the crank. Possibly 1993 and older, someone else could veryify this.

Smile 1986 Trail Boss 250 2x4

Hi MIC
I have a 1986 Trail Boss 250 2x4 and just got it together last night, Check out my Post. If i had changed the Crank Seals last year, I would have been riding it since then.

I would not shy away from another older unit as you can get them pretty cheap, now that I have done this much work to mine. I bought it for my wife to get our horse from the corral and bring it to the tac barn and back so performance is not an issue, my problem was the engine would race and then stall.
It runs like its brand new now and then last night, the bolt for the R/H swing arm fell out while my son was riding it - My bad again. No big deal as we reinstalled that and tightened evrything up.
Hope this helps.
