Default 96 400 scrambler not running right

my scrambler is in need of some help...

I have replaced the needle and seat cleaned the carb installed a k& n filter changed the plug, run good premuim fuel and polaris oil. the bike runs ok but the plug is pretty dark and it dosent have the low end or mid range i thing it should. WOT seems ok.

the bike has a new piston and jug so compression should be good. the main jet is a 230. the choke wan not adjusted corectly, i think it is now but not sure. the idle screw is turned all the way in, which dosend seem correct.

the bike has a aaen pipe, not sure which one, it still has the stock siclencer. Im thinking about re installing the stock pipe in hopes of gaining more botom and midrange,. the AAEN pipe may be a top end pipe ???

I havent touched the clutches or belt so that may be the problem.

how do I determine if the reeds are ok, could this be a problem?

I would be happy with stock preformance at this point.

so its running rich, did you replace the crank seals while you had it apart? as far as running rich im not sure but with all the mods you did some clutch work may be needed. if your running rich you might need to go down a size or 2 on the main and lean it out a bit just watch the plug color.

theres a few guys who know scramblers and clutches that will get you on the right track.

ive noticed on my 400 when i clean the air filter (k & N ) and oil it up and also oil up that pre filter by the tank my 400 smokes to beat heck but i havent fouled out any plugs.

No I did not, i didnt do the work the previous owner did. i will try dropping the main jet from 230 to 220 and see what happens. im betting the clutches need a little work after rebuilding the carb on this bike. My polaris dealer told me he had never seen a more worn out needle and seat. the previous owner maintained it pretty good ,it was his wifes bike but I dont think he ever touched the carb so the cluctches my need some tlc.
