Default how do you tell if your reeds are bad?

I have a 96 400 scrambler aand im not familiar with reed valves, How do you know when they are bad? How does the motor act if they are bad or just ok? are they hard to replace and what brand do you recommend. I just want a good trail machine & some dune ridding.

easiest way to check is pull the cage out and check for a gap between the reed and the seatface. if gap exists time to get new reeds
