Default Can you start an ATV without the recoil housing on it?

Hi All,

My friends recoil housing blew apart, we just took it off tonight. We are not sure if took out the stator and what not. This may be a stupid question, I dont know - Im pretty stupid. Can we try to start the atv without the recoil housing on there? I just want to check to see if it turns over and has spark.

Thanks,
HoopD

I've done it,BUT dont advise it! Used a socket and extension, but can damage bendix,IF not carefull it will twist and locks up! PLUS can cause injury to operator!!

THATS what I meant ! Holding the bendix straight with socket and extension and someone else turning the key! CAN be done, but like I said use caution!!!!!! SECOND thought you can remove plug and ground out,AND you still have to hold bendix, but only long enough to check for spark. DONT advise trying to turn flywheel with an IMPACT and socket as crank nut breakage can happen!! THEN you are up the old creek without a paddle!

Now that I understand, the mechanics behind the bendix. Can I do this and start it up - Put the recoil housing back on with out its internals and then start it. Because all the bendix needs is the support from the recoil housing for it not to wobble right? Still learning, thanks for any inputs. The flywheel and bendix are pretty rusty from years of abuse. Should these be replaced? The quad was running good, or can then just be cleaned with brake cleaner and and pad.

Yes you can start it that way but you do have to support it after it starts if not and it falls it can lock up your flywheel and cause lots of problems. i suggest you do like oldpolaristech pull the plug and set on top of motor and see if sparks. you really don't want the motor to start in this condition. Flywheel Rusty not that big of deal only matters what the magnets on the inside of the flywheel look like if there a little pad get a stainless steel brush for your drill and clean it that way.
