I am new to these forums...I would really appreciate some help getting started...I am attempting to diagnose my sons ATV. It is a Polaris Sportsman 90 a 200 model. It was running fine then Kaaappput......it will turn over and seems to have good compression....no spark to plug even with a new spark plug....I realize there is a cdi unit or something like that but I hate to start spending money replacing parts until I am sure that is the problem....Any help would be greatly appreciated....Thanks and God bless......

 

I see the sportsman 90 has a rectifier, a CDI unit and also a Stator. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe each of these can be responsible for no spark....How do I tell which one is bad....Thanks again....

 

the best thing to do would be track down a service manual for it to get the resistance specs for each of those components. that way you can check each of them out individually. if they all check out ok then i would check flywheel magnets, pickup coil specs, and any and all wires for rubbed through insulation and possible grounding shorts

 

agreed, the manual may be a little spendy, but trust me it is well worth it, it tells you how to test all of the items above, also, if you can find one to purchase and download online, they are usually only about $10 or so, and a hard copy may be $25 or more
