sportsman 2001 light/start/override switch wiring

hello,
I'm in the multifuncion switch of the sportman 500, I would like to know the purpose of the 470 ohm resistor and the 1n4004 diode soldered in the case.
Originally I was looking for ways to lower teh current and voltage to the illumination lamp bulb in the switch.
Seeing that they may have already done this kills my idea of saving these lamps when regulators fail.
Any thoughts?

sorry, I forgot to say this is all factory--no mods here.
it is in the wiring diagrams too for the 2001 sportsman (among others), I just don't understand what it is doing.
they have the diode and resistor in series connecting the red and white +12v wire on pin 4 to the black wire on pin 1. the black then does to the CDI, ETC, and spedometer.
I now know it is not for the illumination lamp light. I have run continuity tests to eliminate these componets from that circuit.
Would they be protection for flyback voltages from starter, headlamps,other high draws?
and I also have put in an LED, I used a super brite white 3mm size, I filed the edge of it so it fit in the holder like the old bulb, i let the leads go straight out the back (not wraping them around the litte disc holder) then I soldered small fine insulated wires to them and put in a 1000 ohm resistor in series (600 ohms would be the lowest). I soldered the annode + lead to the spade of pin 4 and the cathode - lead to the spade of pin 2 (will connect to brown ground wire) where they make the 90 degree bend at the connection holder.
that part now WORKS PERFECTLY! Hopefully by using a higher resistor in my upgrade it will NEVER have to replaced agian, dispite regular regulator failures and battery cell spikes.
And the pod indicator lamps were all converted to LED--same process, removed lenses, soldered 1k ohm resistor in series with the correct color diode --ebay is great for that stuff. For the ones that had lost or cracked lenses, I used hot melt glue and filled the area in--This is something I should of done a LONG time ago--pod lamps are not cheap!
I'll look into the AWD lamp next, and perhaps the spedometer, tail/brake lamps too--I am becomming a fan of LED lamps
Still clueless about the factory diode and resistor----what is it doing?

i would have to agree with that, or its some other sorta safty feature.
as for the leds. im the same way. iv made a few led taillights for the 98-2005ish sportsmans that were led. they had the brake and running light function. iv got one left that i need to finish and sell. but iv added indacator leds to my atv's hand, thumb warmers switches, my reverse light "manual on, and auto on reverse" switch, i added leds to my taillights, reverse lights. iv also made pc boards for my pickup taillights with leds. they light up road signs a few blocks away. i also added leds to the speedometer of the camaro i had along with leds to the indacator lamps. if i can add a led to it i will. im a LED LIGHT FREEK!!!! lol
