What causes backfiring?

Actually, I think it will backfire either way (rich or lean). It depends on whether it is going 'spit, pop' while de-accelerating, or after de-accelerating goes 'pow' when you get on the gas again. Sometimes a hairline crack in the exhaust, near the head, can cause backfiring sounds while de-accelerating.

Backfiring on deceleration is caused by a lean condition.
