Makes sence that it has something to do with the charging system. During the ride the battery got drained buy the fan and other components(lights,etc.) the fan stoped working due to dead battery and thats why you overheated. I imagine after charging the battery at home and it started right up, another 12 miles and you will be in the same boat. JMO

With ATV idling put a volt meter accross the battery post,it should read 13-14v. While your at it put a meter while the ATV is not running the battery should read 12v when fully charged.
