Default '03 Sportsman 600 - replacing spark plug boot

I went to change plugs and discovered the contact within one of the boots broke off due to corrosion. This happened 2 years ago on the other plug. At that time I ordered a replacement boot/wire. I was able to unscrew the boot from the wire on the replacement part, as well as on the ATV so I could just replace the boot. I ordered the same replacement part this week, but I can't for the life of me get the boot unscrewed from the wire. I've twisted it so much that I hope I didn't damage it. So the other option I thought of was just replacing the whole wire/boot at the ignition controller. Looking at the controller, it looks like the wire is hard-wired directly into the side of the controller. So now I'm confused as how to get this fixed. I know it has to be easier than this. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks a bunch.

the cap should just as you mentioned screw off. maybe give a little tug on the cap while trying to unscrew it off?

I've tried and tried again, but it just won't break loose. Very frustrating since it was so easy last time.

stupid question, but not sure if the cap is rubber or plastic, but can you cut it off flush either the cap it self or the wire at the cap end and have enough wire left w/ the new cap installed to still reach good for putting on the spark plug?? just a thought.
