400 xplorer...getting at the dang starter!
I pulled it before...what a time consuming knuckle buster!! My questions, any tips/tricks to pulling it? How about that extra support...do I really need to reinstall it, seems like there's plenty of strength without it?
Not looking forward to this project...again.

when you refer to the extra support. are you talking about the third bolt that goes through recoil cover. or the bracket on the other end.
I always found the third bolt that just barely gets out that hole by the brake pedal to be the bad part. but getting those little cap screws back on that bracket can be tough to I suppose.
the third bolt will help keep water out. leaving the bracket off. I guess one could experiment.

I don't have issue with the bolt behind the recoil cover, I find that one of the easier of the project. Takes time removing the well and cover but at least I can get at it. I have a tought time getting my freakishly large hands up around the starter and to the support arm. Guess I'm just curious if there's if any tips to make it a smoother project, one thing's for sure...it's not easy to get at.

i know EXACTLY what you mean with getting that dang starter out of there. we have 3 polaris's with that same style starter and none of them have that back bracket on there. for some reason i can never find it when its time to bolt the start back up. i think i pick the bracket up and throw it away when im not looking

Any ill effects from "losing" that bracket? My thoughts when I first removed this starter..."what good is this freaking thing!!" I considered "losing" it as well, but no...had to put it back together the same way. From the looks there's plenty of strength and support without that bracket.
