Not enuf fuel for my 2004 Sportsman 500?
#1
Hi; I put some bad gas in my machine - it had some water in it (the gas also fouled my lawn mower and tiller). I disconnected the fuel at the shut-off valve, and it drained completely with good flow. I replaced fuel, but could only start with starter fluid, and would die after a few minutes. Since the lawn mower's fuel filter had fouled, I changed the Polaris's fuel filter also. I noticed when I disconnected the fuel filter that there was no fuel flow. The new filter is clear, and I can see it fill up with gas. When I run the machine (using starter fluid to get it going), the machine requires at least half-choke to keep it going. When revving or getting into gear, the machine will stall out. I notice that the fuel filter is running empty, with the fuel just dribbling in.
Any suggestions for me to check out? Thanks!

did you drain the ga sin the float bowl of the carb as well as the tank? did you put the fuel filter on w/ the gas flow the correct direction? is the vacume line hooked up to the fuel pump to cause suction? the bike doesnt run very good on water mixed gas so it might take a little bit to get it out. is the spark plug all varboned up as well? just a few things to check. imo

Great suggestions;thank you.
The fuel filter is running in the correct direction (that is, as long as the carb inlet is down, below the gas tank).
Vacuum lines seem ok; certainly no change since last week, before I put the known-bad gas in (well, I didn't know it at the time!).
I betcha that carb comment is on the money. I am having the same problem in my lawn mower (same bad gas). Its fuel filter was clogged, which prompted me to change it on the atv, also.
How might the float bowl be drained? A plug I oughta look for?
Thanks again,
Mike

I found that drain screw and tube. I loosened it up and that cruddy mix came out, sure enough. I ran the machine for awhile (needing starter fluid, and needing at least half-choke). The gas that dribbles out of that tube is now gas. But the problem is still there.
