Default Trail Boss 330 axle removal

Hey guys. I picked up an '07 Trail Boss the other day for a STEAL but it needs a few things. First off is the rear axle bearings. On the left side of the axle I took everything off including that tough and elusive split ring. I moved the axle around and the bearings just fell on the ground in pieces. Both sides actually. Now I am having a tough time getting the axle out. Do I just need to put the hub nut back on the end of the axle and use some elbow grease and a 2x4 and 2lb sledge to knock it out? Or is there something I am missing? From what i can see, it looks as if the inner cone of the bearing is stuck on the axle shaft. But it's hard to tell because it's inside the carrier. Please let me know guys!

Thanks.

Well I got it out. 2x4 and sledge worked fine. Bearings were completely missing. Which in turn, from the people riding it with no bearings wore the metal right out of the carrier on one side which I now need to replace because there isn't even a place for the bearing to sit. Luckily, the axle looks fine!
