I do a lot of trial riding in northern Minnesota, and northern Wisconsin in the spring summer and fall. Most of the trails and places I ride during these seasons are rocky, muddy, with lots of loose class 5 gravel. In the winter I plow, and take it out ice fishing. What surprised me was how much sand/road salt got buried into all the crevices of the frame of my wheeler while transporting the atv via trailer from lake to lake and home during the ice fishing season ( my trailer is not enclosed)! Which means only one thing RUST. Even after flushing the ATV at a self serve car wash; there was still plenty of salt in the crevices of the frame. I just finished sanding, priming, and painting the frame of my Sportsman. Surface rust was there fore sure, along with rust starting from the deep scratches and nicks from the trail riding. My advice, keep it as clean as you can in the winter to keep out the road salt. Hope this helps.

Does anyone else spray the underbody and frame, or anything else for that matter on the ATV, with WD-40, or similar spray?

Krown rust control shops sell spray cans that one could use to rust proof there quad . I usually pick up a few cans when I'm in having my trucks sprayed every fall .
