Riding at Rock Run in PA

Riding at Rock Run in PA
This will likely sound like an ad, but I'm in no way affiliated....
Although last weekend was the last of the season for 2009, it was also the first time I got to take my new '10 550 X2 out. I went to Rock Run Recreation Area somewhere a bit west of Tyrone, PA, and can't say enough good things about the place. It was huge (I didn't go on the same trail twice throughout the day). Although I saw plenty of people in the parking lot loading & unloading, I only came across 2 other ATV's out on the trails the entire day. If anything, I wish I had seen more out there. The people at the office were extremely friendly & helpful, and made me feel pretty safe riding around out there (even giving me a number to call if I run into trouble). There was no cell phone service for much of the trip out there, but the trails themselves had cell service everywhere I checked.
They have a number of camp sites connected to the trails, as well as one convenience store of some sort (I didn't stop). It could have used a warming hut, a wash-down area, and a gas pump, but other than that it was perfect. Most of the trails are clearly marked as beginner, intermediate, or expert (with the exception of their newest "Yamaha" trails), and there was a great variety in everything - mud bogs/play ponds, forest, open space, hills, flat, rocks, dirt, even a little race track area.
I do wish it were still open, but they close for the winter. Their web site needs a lot of updating (I.E. if you go looking for operating hours, there were none. If you call, the answering machine tells you to look at the website - which doesn't help a bit). But aside from that, it was great. Can't wait to go back next year!
Until then, I'll be getting used to the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails system...
Anyway, just wanted to pass it along, since it was tough to find much info on Rock Run. I highly recommend it for next year.

Here is another good place to ride. We were down there in April for their open house, but just haven't had a chance to get back there yet.

Is there any more information you can share? It's about 1.5 hours from me, so the last thing I want to do is drive out & find I can't ride there.

You do have to be a member to ride there except for the open houses, and haunted rides. I think the open house we did in April was $15, but that included riding all day and a spaghetti dinner. Here is a link the registration form if you want to become a member.

This price includes membership thru March 2011.
My suggestion would be to go to one of the open houses just to see if you like it before you pay for a whole year. Its a nice way to sample everything before getting in too deep.

I was there for fishers atv world this last weekend and the riding was pretty good considering all of the people but there was enough to do that the trails were not really crowded. I would suggest the park as a destination on another weekend if you really want to have some fun. There is camping and just over 50 miles of trails.
Overall not a bad place and a ton of different terrain.
