On my 08 500 I have to turn a small hex bolt ( screw) to open the drain which allows me to drain my carb . Other than that it should be closed thus no water would get in , if it was open you would be leaking gas all the time .

Well, I put a hose on it and plugged the hose. I too was thinking that if the hex bolt is closed, no water should enter. For some reason mine wasn't tightened. However, from what I understand the hex bolt doesn't actually seal the carb because if you have a needle valve stick, it will allow fuel to drain out of the carb whether or not the hex bolt is tight. I tested this to make sure, I put the hose on and filled it with water, if you put some pressure in the hose the water went right in the carb and stalled the bike, so it's a good lesson to know.... make sure your drain tube is on and tight, the hex bolt is tight and the drain is capped, otherwise, in deep water, it will back up into your carb and stall you out. I know, I've been there. I haven't tested it yet.. but I'm assuming thats what was going on with it. Since I had it apart I used dielelectric grease on every connection I could see.
