I hear ya HO, especially after they had this little problem before..... Polaris to Pay $950,000 Penalty for Failing to Report Hazards with ATVs

I thought for sure I saw a letter online somewhere that someone posted and it had "cpsc" at the top..........maybe it was for something else, but I swore it was for ball joints.

The Polaris letter does say "In cooperation with the CPSC"....but the recall still doesn't show up on the CPSC website? The Can-Am DPS recall letter was also sent out by the manufacturer and says "In cooperation with the CPSC" but it is listed on the CPSwebsite...mayeb the CPSC dropped the ball, but likely not. Not sure what difference it makes other than I would assume the CPSC would have more notification resources, more likely to end up in the news...and are likely monitored closely by money hungry lawyers...

More suspicious than anything though is NO Polaris press release on their site!!! That there is fishy....and tells me it is an UNofficial "recall"...they are trying to keep it quiet..WHY? Not like they don't recall machines fairly regularly...serious enough for a "safety recall" letter, but not make it official? Bizarre...
All the other recalls are in the press releases...last one is for the Rangers back in August, and that one is also on the CPSC site..

Is it just the 850XP with the problem knuckle thing or is the 550XP included? The 550XP hasn't been mentioned on this thread..... I thought they were the same except for the motor and the brakes...

LOL... I had to re-read your post, especially that sentence. Yea... no lack of quality control there... huh?

On a positive note, your not alone! Last year at this time in the group we ride with, there were 2 XP's, a Hawkeye, and my machine. When mine is gone, there will be none. To the man, they say "never again". At first, I thought they were not being fair. However, now I see where they are coming from.

I suspect your machine is still under warranty, and maybe you never ride one beyond the warranty period. If and when that stuff starts digging deep into your wallet, you may have a change of heart. BTW, if that front diff goes... you'll be digging REAL deep.

To be honest, if Polaris, or my dealer throws in a 3 year warranty for free on an XP... I'd take one.

BTW, I will probably be moving to another machine, but I won't be moving on so to speak. Polaris gave me a screwing... I fully intend to give them one back at every opportunity.

The Ball Joint issue is not a Recall. It is a Safety Bulletin. Hence that may be why it doesn't appear on the CPSC website. I don't know the criteria used to define when something is a Safety Bulletin vs. a Recall.

I'm fine w/the way Polaris handled this. They sent me a letter stating the problem, I take it to my dealer, they inspect, tell polaris to warranty both sides, a "complete kit" as they called it - a week later I pick it up, no biggie...it happens...especially 1st year model.

NoJoke - they ran the vin on my 550 and it did not need it, although they made it sound like this is a problem with WHERE it was built, as in - different suppliers for the parts involved - rather than when or anything else. So my 550 did not need the swap....others might - a shop can run the VIN and find out.

Only saw an actual FREE warranty once from any manufacturer that was longer than a year, and that was the free 2 year warranty last year on the XP's. I think it would be a smart move to have a warranty on any new machine right now, but only if you have a good dealer.

If a person had this many recalls/problems and TSB's with their vehicals they drive every day you would never buy from that brand again! Funney how "forgiving" people are with ATV's. I know they are in the tough stuff but they are also made for it to some degree.

Our F550 had many recalls, problems, and TSB's. My 02 2500HD Chevy had quite a few also. Now my 09 Ram 3500 already has 2 recalls. My motorhome which is a 1995 also had a recall and that was just last year for a fire hazard with the cruise control. I believe Toyota has a bunch right now between some cars (gas pedal, I think) and their trucks rusting out........ I believe there are way more recalls with on road vehicles. With other domestic stuff, especially kids toys, there are even more.

I know, I was only being facetious... that's the only way I would get another Polaris, and I don't see Polaris or my dealer throwing one in for free... so I'm safe.
