I am looking to install two winches on the quad, one with an oversized motor (more on this later), but for it all to work reliably I need a second battery and a stator upgrade.

I spoke to RM Stator but all they can offer is a replacement over the factory part, not specifically an uprated one.

Any more ideas???

Thanks guys

Just curious- why do you need a stator upgrade for a winch? you'll only be using one at a time in short bursts, even with a heavy duty motor I'd imagine your charging system could handle a short burst of power to operate a winch (or two) for the few seconds it takes to pull yourself out of the hole you're stuck in- unlike high power lights that remain on for long periods of time draining the system... I see guys all the time with dual 3000 & 4000 lb winches on factory systems.

these atv's charging systems are more for maintaining the full battery charge then charging a dead battery up.
I think it can charge the system up, 12v will run a the 3 light mod with the ATV off for a long while. when the ATV is running the system throws out 13 to 14V.

I killed my battery many times, using the parked turned off ATV as a camp area light, with a tug of the rope the ATV will start and in less then 5 minutes with lights still on the ATVs electric start works normal again.

Another thing that will buy you time is to buy a more exspensive battery with a Higher AH (Amp Hour) rating.

I'll be using it in winch competitions here in the UK. I'll expand on this when I have more time.

The winch will be used more for getting you from A to B in awkward spaces rather than just unstuck, tho that too.

oh- I gottcha, like those crazy "billy goat" people who winch their atv's up mountain cliffs- I guess you would need a little more juice for that.

I think you should go nuts and do a custom hydraulic winch setup- that'll blow their minds! All you'd need is one heavy duty electric motor and a small pump to work both hydraulic winches- that would be sweet!

something like this hyd winch right here:

Steering Power Driver Hydraulic Self-Recovery Winch 12000lbs manufacturer, Steering Power Driver Hydraulic Self-Recovery Winch 12000lbs supplier, China Steering Power Driver Hydraulic Self-Recovery Winch 12000lbs factory, offer OEM service

not much would slow you down with a 12,000 lb line pull!

I'm afraid it's all been done over here, at least on a slightly bigger scale.

Between the Brits and the Aussies we've probably got the most advanced winches available in the competition world.

The electric winch everyone had to have was the Warn 8274 High Mount.

Warn M8274-50 12V Winch - Gigglepin4x4 - Home of the Twinmotor winch

However there is now a new kid on the block, the GP84, twin 12 volt motors running off 24 volts

Gigglepin GP84 Winch - Gigglepin4x4 - Home of the Twinmotor winch

Some guys run hydraulic set ups and the have some good points.

If you have a look around the gallery here, gigglepin4x4.net Photo Gallery - Home

you can see what we get up to.

The plan is for next year to introduce an ATV class into the events and I'm one of the guineapigs!!!!!

But back to this stator upgrade...........
