I think what STENDORI was getting at was whether or not there's a sound while the motor is under load or just when it's freewheeling. I'm trying to think back, but I think it does it more when it's freewheeling- if I'm going down a steep hill, I grit my teeth it sounds so bad- it's slapping, chattering and fighting me the whole way down. If I have it in AWD, then there is no engine brake at all- going down hill.


It's only when going over rocky or rough terrain. if it's smooth like a dirt road, then I don't really hear anything.

 

well i'm not sure what PMWI is talking about on his bike, but i'm telling you from owning 2 800's(06 and 08) there is drive line noise that sounds terrible. going along you don't really hear any of this noise but you do while appling the brakes of getting onthe gas mostly at slow speeds. i'm not saying this is what your issue is but it might be part of the noise your hearing if your not use to it. unless the clutch is completely falling apart i don't beleave that would be the issue. imo.

 

It's probably normal what I'm hearing then-
My popo only has 148 miles on it, I'm assuming the clutch is fine.

I don't know what the foot pedal is supposed to do, if I step on it- it wont slow me down at all. I was told it was some kind of clutch assist to shift gears, from low to high, and from park to high. Just like the grizz- you have to step on the pedal to shift out of park...

had all kinds at one time lol. no the foot peddle on the right is a rear brake(if you want to call it that)that for most models doesn't work very good. if you look at it,you'll the brake line hooked to it. some people bleed it out to help it to work again, but i suggest setting a heavy weight on the peddle over night to help prime it back to working. sometimes this works and sometimes not. this is what i did on my 06' to get it to work it's a really pis poor system they have and they changed the location of the brake resiour in 08' to a higher location for better working in which it does.

 

Hey! I get a little chatter from the rear end when going slowly down a rough hill. I always assumed it was the rear diff or gearbox. It only seems to happen when one fo the rear wheels dropps off a rock or log or something while engine braki9ng down a hill. I think it's just slop between the gearbox and diff and when the rear wheel loses contact with the ground, then regains it, it slaps the gears.

Mine has been doing it since day one and has not gotten any worse or caused problems. I have an 09 500 X2 I bought new in August and I have about 800 miles on it now.

 

Did you ever figure out what was causing that chatter, or get it fixed? My 03 sportsman 700 is doing it now. I think it is the EBS (Engine Braking System) acting up, because the EBS is no longer working and the noise has replaced it... it's an awful noise.

 

Could be the one way bearing washers on the front clutch are worn(fiber washer behind the one way bearing and usually a brass plated washer under the spacer cap that gets ground down and warps) plus the one way bearing probably needs cleaned up and greased,or replaced. It takes a spider tool to get to this area along with a clutch puller. Plus the brass washer has been changed to a harder steel washer as a replacement. You can purchase the tools,BUT unless you do your own service,It might be cheaper just to either just pull the clutch with the puller(between 25-30 dollars) and take the clutch in for repair,OR just let the dealer do it. Plus don't over look the belt and replace if necessary. OPT

 

it's normal- even the new one's, though not quite as bad, still chatter going down hills...

 

We had a similar problem with a older model sportsman 700. What we to find out what was wrong with it was to ...........get all four wheels of the ground safetly then checked at every axle one by one and listen and looked for the slightest imperfections. In doing so we found that the right rear axle was slighty bent causing a whole bunch of mis alignments.
