Default Scrambler 400 clutch problems

I have a 97 scrambler 400 4x4 i have been working on a while now.In nuetral it revs fine, but once i put it in gear it will not rev up much, will barley move the quad.At first i thought it was the limiter, now im thinking the clutches.I pulled the driven clutch and rotated the buttons to the frsh side and put it back on and started it up and before i could even give it a try i heard some clanking noise coming from the drive clutch, shut it off and it made a squeal when the motor stopped, looked at the drive clutch and the spider in the clutch had somehow worked it self loose, took it aprat and the spider was about a half inch unthreaded.Should i just replace the clutch or just try to tighten down the spider.

The spyder has to be tightened to about 150 lbs torque, the tool for this is really recommended. Most dealers could do this for you pretty cheap! Plus best to replace the spyder buttons rather than turning over, although replacing all 6 isn't cheap. OPT

I turned over the ones in the secondary clutch, the ramps,do you think this problem with me not being able to accelerate when in gear?

Sorry thought you were talking about the front drive buttons,BUT the rear clutch ramp buttons (3) are curved to really fit one way,and if really worn or melted down, best to replace them. Plus do you have the tension on the helix 1/3 rd turn on the spring when you reassembled? also does belt have too much slack? If you can press down on center of belt and using a straight edge on top of the clutches, the slack is more than 1 1/2" from the belt to the straight edge, then belt could need replacing. PS: You can remove a couple shims (washers) inside the rear clutch (must leave one in) to help tighten belt, but doesnt always take up enough slack! OPT

i have the spring tention to 1/3 of a turn, thanks for the tip on the washers.I have to try to get the tool to tighten down the spider in the primary clutch before i can give it a try,im wondering if i may be able to make something that will work, but to be honest im not quite sure how the tool works,in they manual it says it should be tightened down to 200 ft lbs,so i need to get something figured out, because i cant tighten it that tight by hand, thats for sure

Its a triangular shaped tool that you can use a breakover, torque wrench, or 1/2" impact. It along with the locking base that holds the fins of the bottom clutch sheath allows you to tighten OR as I do ,I just hold the clutch and impact spyder tight as I can! Works! Like I said MOST dealers will do this for you. OPT
