Default Please Help!!! 2000 Sportsman Prop Shaft Issue

I have searched the forums high and low for my issue and I can't find anything....so here is my question.

I have a 2000 Polaris Sportsman 500. While doing some winter maintenance I noticed the rear u-joint on my prop shaft was bad. I got it out and went to order it to only find out online and from the dealer that Polaris stopped making that prop shaft and u-joint. They went with another that the dealer wants $200 for the replacement assy. I hate to spend the cash when all I need is just the u-joint. I have a hard time believing I can't cross reference it with something else.

I took my old one to Napa and the Napa 338 is a tad bigger than the one I have. I ordered one off ebay that claimed that fit mine and it too is a tad too big (same size as a Napa 338). The Napa 812 looks close so I ordered that and will try it.

Has anyone ever ran into this issue on a 99-00 Sportsman and if so, where did you find a u-joint that would fit? Also, if anyone knows a part #, that would be great.

Thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to try and help me!!!!

i can't believe the people at napa couldn't find you a joint. they look like a regular everyday pto type u-joint.

cap diameter,snapring distance and greasable

Actually they ordered a Napa 812 (will be in tomorrow) but not 100% sure it will work because the old u-joint was in such bad shape. We measured the cap for a snap ring outside and the width of the u-joint. If it works I'll update later. If not, I also read that a New Holland dealer might be able to cross reference it for a PTO of some sort. Either way I'll try to update this thread so it can help someone else.

I posted in hopes someone went through this already and could point me in a faster direction with a link or something. I can't believe this is such a PITA, makes me want to sell the Sportsman lol.

Here is a hole aftermarket parts post for commom Polaris parts. Many people use the Napa 338 by the looks of it.

Make a list of common numbers we need

TLC - thanks for that link!!!

Well, I finally found the right u-joint. Turns out mine needed the Napa 812 as the 338 was a tad too big. The 812 is a perfect match to the one I took out. I'm glad I didn't need to fork out $200 for the new prop shaft assy. I must have the earlier discontinued prop shaft that they dumped mid 2000. Either way I'll be up and running soon...wish some extra $$$ in my pocket. Thanks to all who helped point me in the direction I needed to go.....
